Griffin and Bonnar

Aug 2nd, 2010

I just happened to catch a replay of the finals for TUF 1, Forrest Griffin vs Stephan Bonner. What a great fight!!!

These two guys went in throwing everything they had showing great stand up from the beginning to the end. No one ever thought that what they were about to bring to the table would turn out to be one of the greatest fights in UFC history. The tremendous heart shown by both of them brought them much respect.

Being a striking coach, breaking down the fight I would critique this and this only. Both Forrest and Stephan showed that they could strike but one thing missing from their arsenal was hitting to the body. There were many times when attrition set in, mostly Forrest. Could you imagine what would have been the outcome if Bonner would have attacked the body? I'm pretty sure the result would have been different if he invested more into the body. The dividends would have definitely paid off.

So my advice for the day is, attack the body. Learn how to drop that level to slow down the attack of your opponent as well as break him down. Headhunting can cut into your gas tank especially when you miss big. Hitting the midsection of your opponent is like poking holes into his gas tank. Eventually the tank will empty and the possibilty you will get a stoppage will become more likely.
